THE LOST PHILOSOPHY

The giving of gifts during Christmas goes back to the time when the Wise Men, the Magi’s, who came from the East (Persia) 1, looking for “the one born King of the Jews”, 2 from the lineage of King David 3, and brought with them THREE GIFTS, for baby Jesus.

The three gifts were symbolically presented in the form of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. Analysts have given various interpretations for these gifts but the Bible has its official interpretation in Matthew Ch 4.

But first, we need to learn a little about the Magi’s so as to be able to understand that what is said by Matthew and Luke.

We need to remember a few points. In the Bible, the Magi’s are called Wise Men. The Magi Tribe according to Herodotus were a learned Median tribe (modern Kurdistan) which was part of the Persian Empire. The mother of Cyrus the Great was a Median. The Magi’s and the Persians were the followers of the teachings of the Iranian Sage Zarathushtra.

Zarathushtra was a student of Nature and he said; ‘Nature harbours all the secrets that can lead humankind towards happiness and help it progress towards perfection’. All we need to do is use our mind in a good way. His one and only prayer was to be able to achieve the Perfectness of the Mind.

                                                                                                   This I seek with reverence
With uplifted hands
The perfectness of the mind
Wisdom (Mazda) is the first righteous gift of Nature
All should aspire to make Good use of the intelligence in the mind
To create harmony between the universe
And the inner-self.
Zarathushtra – Gatha – Yasna 28.1 (FR)

He had derived from Nature the formula that can lead humans to achieve harmony between the Universe and their Inner self, leading individuals towards perfection, immortality, and spirituality.
Truly, the Asha (Ultimate Truth) (2) derived
By the Good Mind (1)
Never before known
Among the wise and all creation
With it, make Good Rules (3) and never waning
Increasing Righteousness (4)
Leading us towards Perfection (5)
Zarathushtra – Gatha -Yasna Ha 28.3 (FR)

He wanted that all those who discover secrets from Nature should spread it with good words. Neither should it be copywritten nor should it be spread by force.

                                                                                                      Asha when you gain
With mind’s good use
Having realized wisdom
The path to creativity
The ultimate message of Wisdom
Through words excellent
We shall turn
Those who do not know
(With tongue) By speaking
Zarathushtra – Gatha -Yasna Ha 28.5 (FR)

The Magi’s were just doing that, they had come to give baby Jesus their most valuable possession, the first three steps towards Immortality and Spirituality. These first three steps are the ones that a person, a society, a nation has to achieve. Once they are achieved the other 4 steps follows with comparative ease.

These seven steps, also know as “Amasha Spantas”,4 The Eternal Law, are as under:

1- Good Mind– Use your Good Mind to inquire and learn the
2- Ultimate Truth– the Laws of Nature- Use them to make
3- Good Rules – Good Laws- Good Products – Which will lead to
4- Lawful Desire – Righteousness – that will pave the way toward
5- Perfection – Mental, Physical and Spiritual – which will lead to
6- Immortality –(a) In Death being remembered for your good work for generations
(b) In Life by losing the fear of Death –resulting in oneness with
7- The Creator of Wisdom – Khod Ah through Self Realization, KHOD = Self AH = to come.

The word KHOD-AH or KHUD-AH in many Eastern languages when used as a proper name means GOD. Word by word it means self-realization finding God within oneself. Jesus says “I and the father are one”. The people did not understand him and stoned him for Blasphemy. 5

Under this philosophy, Knowledge is Wealth, Innovation is Wealth, Good Deeds is Wealth, excelling in one’s profession is Wealth. Gold, diamonds, dollars, and pounds are just facilities.
Competing with each other in Doing Good is the norm.

And those who are righteous are known for
Good deeds and use of the wise mind
In a righteous way in tune with Wisdom in Existence

                                                                                                                Their aim achieved
Their desire assuredly happiness
Their reward, knowledge and being known as righteous,
faithful and are praiseworthy (6)
Zarathushtra – Gatha – Yasna HA 28.10 (FR)

Now that we know the philosophy of the Magi’s let go to the Bible, Matthew Chapter 4, and see what the Gifts represented.

‘ Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil.’ (Matthew 4:1)
Although this test lasted 40 days it is comprised of only three questions.6

The understanding of the Three gifts of the Magi’s – Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh – GOOD MIND (Vohu-mana), ULTIMATE TRUTH (Asha Vahista) and GOOD LAWS (Khash-Athra-Vairyu), was to be put to the test.

The test was about what Jesus had learned from the Scriptures given to him by the Magi’s as against the pagan scriptures.

‘But he (Jesus) answered “It is written, …’ (Matthew 4:4) and the paganist scripture was being used by the devil (the examiner). ‘….. If you are the son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written …’ (Matthew 4:5,6)

The first symbolic test for Jesus was with regard to the use of the power of his mind in a good way, Good Mind.

Matt-4:3 And the Tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Matt-4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’.”

The tempter wanted the use of the mind to be limited to making bread (creating wealth). (Like it is done today, by creating patents and copyrights and buying knowledge and limiting its use, creating superficial needs, and shortages just to make money) But Jesus says that the mind should be used in a Good way for the benefit of mankind, as desired by God.

Next, his knowledge of the Ultimate Truth was tested, a test of the Natural law – the law of gravity, against the Paganistic beliefs of angles and devils.

Matt.-4:5 Then the Tempter took him to the holy city, and set on the pinnacle of the temple, 4:6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will give the angels charge of you, and on their hands, they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone’.”

Jesus knows his science, he knows the truth, he knows that the force of gravity will pull him down and there is no Angle to stop it. Thus, he says, sorry The Truth cannot be changed there are no exceptions.

4:7 Jesus said unto him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God’.”
The final test was on making Good Laws. He was given the choice of making bad laws and reaping the benefits but Jesus chose to make just the Righteous laws.

Matt.4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; -4:9 and he said to him, ” All these I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus rejects the offer and says one should serve the righteous law of God. 4:10

Then Jesus said, “Begone, Satan! for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.'” ‘ (Matthew 4:8-10)

He came out of the test with flying colors having understood the three gifts (Good Mind – Ultimate Truth- Good Laws) successfully. (Matthew 4:11)

Thereafter Jesus went out to preach the Seven Laws, spread the Truth and banish ignorance.

‘ the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ (Matthew 4:16)

He preached the Seven Eternal Laws, with the end result of Self Realization, which he said, was achievable.

” Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)

Very soon he had many followers,’ And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordon.’ (Matthew 4:25)

And he wanted them to be better than the “Persian Jews” 7 and the scribes who had failed to spread the Truth.

‘ For I tell you unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matthew 5:20)
Jesus preaches Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds and corrects some of the old beliefs. (Matthew 5:1-48)

He drops the barrier between man and God by showing the way to the achievement of Hurvatata (Perfection). He clearly states that Godly Perfection is achievable.

‘ Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.’ (Matthew 5:1-48)

All this surprised those that heard him ‘ for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.’ (Matthew 7:29)

Zarathushtra had placed humans on a footing never before known to these scribes the Achaemenian Persian Empire is a good example of the progress achieved by civilization during the two and a half centuries that they ruled a superpower.

Let us understand and use the Gifts of the Magi’s like Jesus did, and create a Heaven on Earth.

Not like the scribes do, and postpone Heaven for the afterlife.

The Congress in Perth has limited time for discussions and debates like in all other previous programmes. One can only discuss so much in the limited time we have available. So we have come up with the idea that we can start discussions on a digital platform from now on until the Congress meets in Perth, June 2018.

This is the first time that digital media is being utilised for the World Zoroastrian Congress in this manner where we are asking anyone who wants to voice their opinions and thoughts about the communities issues. We respect your views and opinions and are sure that you will also do the same for others. Being an educated community we must tolerate and welcome other people's views.

Anyone can put up there ideas and thoughts here as long as the below simple guidelines are followed.

  • No vulgar, sexist or racist remarks against anyone
  • No promotion of any sort including political parties and candidates
  • No remarks that could be deemed derogatory towards other people, cultures or religions etc

There is a panel of moderators worldwide who are the authority to delete any comments or articles that do not meet the guidelines
